Land Acknowledgement

GILDA’S TORONTO LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND COMMITMENT TO RECONCILIATION STATEMENT

Gilda’s Toronto acknowledges that we are on the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties, signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands.

This territory is the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, a treaty between the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas and Haudenosaunee that bound them to share the territory and protect the land. Subsequent Indigenous Nations and peoples, settlers and all newcomers have been invited into this treaty in the spirit of peace, friendship and respect.

As part of Gilda’s Toronto commitment to reconciliation, we are providing educational opportunities to help our staff learn more about our shared history and the harms that have been inflicted on First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We are working to establish mutually respectful relationships with Indigenous people across the GTA. We will continue to incorporate recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission into our work. We are grateful for the opportunity to work across Turtle Island.
