Some examples of major gifts
Gifts of Securities
If you own securities, including stocks or mutual funds, that have appreciated since you purchased them, consider using that asset for your charitable giving. Your gift of securities entitles you to a donation receipt for your contribution’s full market value (resale). Your gift will result in a non-refundable tax credit, reducing your income taxes. You can use it in the year of your donation or carry it forward for up to five additional years.
Gift of Life Insurance
There are three options to give a gift of life insurance.
- You can sign over an existing policy with cash value (i.e. a permanent policy) to Gilda’s Toronto.
- A new policy (whole/ universal life) can be taken out by individuals or couples on their lives or the life of a loved one and given to Gilda’s Toronto.
- You can make Gilda’s Toronto the beneficiary of a life insurance policy (including a policy for your workplace).
If you sign over a policy to Gilda’s Toronto, you’ll receive a tax receipt for the ‘cash surrender’ value. If you make Gilda’s Toronto the policy owner, you’ll receive a tax receipt for the premiums you pay.
Gift of RRSPs and RRIFs
You can make Gilda’s Toronto the beneficiary of your RRSPs or RRIFs. Ask the institution holding these investments for a change of beneficiary form, and insert Gilda’s Toronto as your new beneficiary. When making a legacy gift, you must include our charitable registration number: 11878 5914 RR0001.
